Introduction

Upheaval buckling refers to the phenomenon that occurs when trenched and buried pipelines are subjected to axial compression forces as a result of high temperature and pressure. The pipeline experiences a large vertical displacement and push up through the soil cover, leaving the pipeline exposes to impact from anchors or trawlboards. Excessive bending is another failure mode.

Upheaval buckling assessment usually consists of finite element analysis on control cases to determine the approximate amount of 'cover' required on a pipeline.

After installation a survey is usually conducted to determine the vertical profile of the pipeline and the amount of soil/rock cover. This information is used to determine if further cover is required to ensure that the pipeline will not be susceptible to upheaval buckling.
